The Importance of Detailing Your Vehicle

Maintaining your vehicle’s exterior paint may seem like something you do for fun, possibly holidays or events, or when you want to feel a bit more pride in your ride. These are great reasons, but there are many more physical benefits to keeping your car clean!

Clear Coat Failure

Clear Coat Failure

The final stage of clear coat failure, when the paint is completely exposed.

We’ve all seen it - the hood of a car that looks like it had a bad sunburn last week, and now it’s peeling. Well, it did, and it is. Clear coat failure is when the thin, thin clear coat has eroded over time, exposing the paint to the elements.

The most common reasons for this failure is excess sanding/buffing of the clear coat, excess high UV sun exposure, dried out paint, and lack of extra protection, which is the most common reason. Proper detailing techniques prevent excess sanding/buffing by using a paint thickness gauge to check every panel on the car compared to a spot like the door jamb where there will be very little, if any, clear coat applied. This process allows the detailer to see how much clear coat there is to work with on the paint. Add on protection - such as a high-quality carnauba wax, polymer sealant, or ceramic coating - and your paint will stay free of clear coat failure.

Rust Prevention

The above situation of clear coat failure can expose paint, which still leaves an incredibly thin layer of protection over the bare metal of the car. Rust is dangerous. It compromises the safety of the vehicle, and can cause parts of the car to completely fail or fall off. Regular cleaning of the car by a professional detailer can greatly help prevent rust from appearing. If rust is on the car, a good detailer will inform you of the rust spot and may be able to help you figure out what would be best for your car.

Your Health

Vehicle interiors collect dust, dirt, crumbs, spills, stains, pollen, odors, and other bacteria and allergens that are generally harmful to your health. It may not be immediate, but breathing in these things for extended periods of time will eventually deteriorate your own health, just like it will your car’s. A proper detail gets into all the nooks and crannies where dust collects, and uses strong-yet-safe cleaners designed to keep your car clean for at least a little bit.

Driving Safety

Clean windshields and windows allow for better visibility on the road. Having dirt and grime stuck onto your vehicle’s glass can greatly reduce visibility and make your blind spots even worse. Good windshield wipers help, but glass that’s properly cleaned and maybe even coated will help keep your glass clean and your vision clear.
